tough times ahead for our young folk?

Recent unemployment statistics suggest that we are far from being out of the economic woods, and that for our young people in particular  - tough times still lie ahead.

The statistics (see "Brian Gaynor: Surge in jobless hitting younger Kiwis hardest") show unemployment having risen to a staggering 18.4%. That's nearly one in every five young people who want a job - can't get one.

Sadly, this doesn't surprise me, as our year 13 intake has risen from approximately 330 at this time last year to nearly 420 this year. This is a staggering rise in our roll at this level!

This dramatic rise in students suggest three thoughts:

1. secondary school is not a holding pen
2. high quality qualifications are vital
3. sound careers guidance is essential

All these three points are relevant to Pakuranga College.
